To play these adventures, it helps to download an interpreter which then lets you play the stories on your desktop. It's also possible to play many of them in your browser too.

Click here to go to the Download page for the interpreter Lectrote. Choose the last zip file "win32-x64" (for Windows) or "macos-univ" (for MacOS).

The folder below contains some classic adventures to play.

DOWNLOAD the Wishbringer folder first and open it on your desktop. Have a look at the Manual then get ready to open the Game

Each folder also has secret maps and hints to help you if you get stuck - don't use these until you need to!

This is what a text adventure will look like in Lectrote:

HOW TO PLAY

Stories created with Inform use a PARSER.

> ENTER YOUR COMMAND HERE

This is the input line where you add your commands and the program interprets them.

You have to add simple commands which contain a VERB (1) or a DIRECTION (2), a VERB and a NOUN (3), or a VERB and two NOUNS (4).

1. > WAIT

You wait and the smoke in front of the castle slowly clears...

2. > NORTH

You arrive at the Dining Room. It's huge with a long mahogany table complete with a candlestick and a series of looming portraits.

3. > EXAMINE BED

As you unfold the bed covers, a key slips out and falls with a clang to the floor.

4. > UNLOCK DOOR WITH KEY

The lock clicks satisfyingly. The cell door is now unlocked.

4. > GIVE HAT TO WIZARD

"Oh, thanks," says the wizard. "I've been looking for that everywhere! Would you like this potion?" he asks, offering you a bubbling green bottle.
