Year 7: Myths and Legends - Heroes and Monsters
We begin at the beginning by examining how archetypes work and what their significance is in storytelling. Almost immediately, we challenge some of these ideas when we revisit your summer novel The Way Past Winter. In this novel, the hero is a young girl who must go on a quest to save her family. Later in the term, we'll teach you about the main techniques in poems and also write some of our own.
In the Lent term, we'll study a whole novel (currently The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien) which follows on from our monomyth explorations in Michaelmas. We focus on the fantasy genre and our writing skills, which is excellent preparation for our newspaper project which will give you the chance to learn the skills of a budding 'journo' and question what you read and see in the media. A few lucky pupils will also get the chance to take part in the BBC News Report in which they will make the news for a whole day instead of going to school!
In the first half of the Trinity term, we'll revise your poetry skills and help you to refine your essay writing and understanding of criticism. There's also the chance for some creative writing - after exams, we'll help you to enter some of Guernsey's main competitions to compete for prizes here. Then, it's into summer and the chance for us all to stretch out in the sun with a few choice books!
